Cloning copies the layout, not just your files
A clone duplicates partition offsets, hidden recovery volumes, and sometimes drive letters expectations. Treat the first boot on new hardware as a test flight. Educational only — keep a verified image backup before you erase the source disk.
Source disk health
Run SMART and surface sanity checks. Cloning a failing disk can abort halfway or propagate corruption. Image what you can read first if errors appear.
Target capacity
The destination must fit all used sectors or you must shrink volumes first. NVMe to NVMe is fastest; USB bridges vary wildly in stability.
Boot mode alignment
UEFI systems expect GPT with EFI system partition. After clone, remove the old disk for the first boot test to avoid letter confusion, then reattach as storage if needed.
Post-clone verification
Confirm BitLocker state, re-enable security features, and run Windows Update. Keep the old disk untouched until you trust the new install.
